ASTROLOGY AND GEMS - The Selection Criteria of Gemstones for Astrological Purpose.

Hello guys! I am back with another post regarding the selection criteria for suggesting any gemstones.
In Astrology, there are many criteria based on which the gemstones are advised to any person. As I mentioned in my previous post as well that each gemstone is suitable for a certain purpose in your life. Further, the gemstone which is advised to any native must fulfil certain criteria in order to serve the desired purpose. The common criteria include:

  • The Month of  Birth (The Vedic Sun Sign)
When accurate birth information is not known, one can determine the position of the Sun at the time of the birth. This is how the gemstone of the respective Vedic Sun Sign is prescribed. Below are Sun signs and their respective Gemstones.

SUN SIGN - GEMSTONE - SIGNIFICANCE

ARIES - BLOODSTONE - COURAGE

TAURUS - DIAMOND - INNOCENCE

GEMINI - EMERALD - LOVE, SUCCESS

CANCER - PEARL, MOONSTONE - HEALTH, LONGEVITY

LEO - RUBY - CONTENTMENT

VIRGO - SARDONYX, PERIDOT - MARITAL BLISS

LIBRA - BLUE SAPPHIRE - CLARITY IN THOUGHT, SPIRITUALITY

SCORPIO - OPAL, TOURMALINE - HOPE

SAGITTARIUS - YELLO SAPPHIRE, TOPAZ - FIDELITY

CAPRICORN - TURQUOISE, ZIRCON - PROSPERITY

AQUARIUS - GARNET - CONSTANCY

PISCES - AMETHYST - SINCERITY

HOWEVER, I personally don't recommend this criterion as according to me, it is quite vague to suggest any gemstone based on the Sun's position (the Vedic Sun sign) in any chart. We have to look into many other aspects in the natal birth chart so as to prescribe the gemstone.

  • The Date of Birth (The Vedic Date/Janma Tithi)
The Vedic date of birth i.e. Janma Tithi is ruled by one of the eight planets from the Sun to Rahu. It is basically the Hindi dates that you might have noticed in certain calendars in India, which mention the Hindi dates. It goes as :

SUN (PRATIPAD, NAVAMI) - 1st, 9th

MOON (DWITEEYA, DASHAMI) - 2nd, 10th

MARS (TRITEEYA, EKADASHI) - 3rd, 11th

MERCURY (CHATURTHI, DWADASHI) - 4th, 12th

JUPITER (PANCHAMI, TRYODASHI) - 5th, 13th

VENUS (SHASHTI, CHATURDADHI) - 6th, 14th

SATURN (SAPTAMI, POORNIMA) - 7th, FULL MOON

RAHU (ASHTAMI, AMAVASYA) - 8th, NO MOON

If the Lord of the Vedic date of birth i.e. Janma Tithi id malefic and inimical then one may use the respective gemstone plus service to the Holy Cow in order to ward off the concerning evil.

HOWEVER, If the lord of the concerned date is inimical to the ascendant ( Lagna ) in the native's birth chart, it is advised to wear the respective gemstone in the left hand, while if it is beneficial and friendly to the ascendant, one should wear in the right hand.

  • The Day of Birth (Janma Vara)
While there are some astrologers who go on prescribing the gemstone based on this criterion of using the Day of Birth i.e. Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), so on, I don't recommend this at all. This is not an accurate method to advise any gemstone. Rather one should see The Vedic date of birth i.e. Janma Tithi and Birth constellation or Janma Nakshatra instead.

  • The Birth Constellation of Moon (Janma Nakshatra)
The gemstone of the lord of the birth constellation of the Moon (based on the rulership by the Vimshottari Dasa Planets- Navgraha). This is mainly for mental solace and peace. This also gives stress reduction and elevates any sort of negativity and unnecessary pessimism.
For example: if a person is born under the Satabhisaj Nakshatra (Moon star at birth), consequently, Rahu is the Lord and its gemstone is Hessonite i.e Gomed. If Rahu is inimical to the Lagna of the native then gemstone should be worn in the left hand whereas if Rahu is friendly or beneficial to the Lagna, gemstone in the right hand would give good results.

  • The Ascendant of Birth (Janma Lagna)
The lord of the Ascendant (Lagnesh) is the primary controller of health and well being of the native. It is the life force. If native generally remains unwell so for the improvement in the health and overall wellness, one can opt for a gemstone in relation to the Lord of the Ascendant. This gemstone is known as Life Stone.
According to me, This is the most preferred way of prescribing a gemstone to a person for his/her overall sense of well being and strength. Also, this stone can be worn through the maximum period of your life as this is a life-stone.
For example: If your Ascendant (Janma Lagna) is Sagittarius. Then the Lord of Ascendant (Lagnesh) is Jupiter. Consequently, the gemstone to be worn is Yellow Sapphire or Topaz.

  • The Desired Deity (Ishta/Dharma Devta)
The Maharatna or Gemstone based on this criterion are offered to the Panch Devata (Five Principle Deities).

LORD GANESHA - PRITHVI (EARTH) TATVA - EMERALD

LORD SHIVA - VAYU (AIR) TATVA - DIAMOND

GODDESS SHAKTI/DEVI - JAL (WATER) TATVA - PEARL

SURYA DEV - AGNI (FIRE) TATVA - RUBY

LORD VISHNU - AKASH (ETHER) TATVA - BLUE SAPPHIRE

  • The Ninth House Lord (Bhagya Bhava Swami-for good fortune)
The placement and situation of the Ninth House Lord also known as Bhagya Swami indicate one's fortune. How much luck would favour the native is being judged primarily from the ninth house Lord along with the Lord of the fifth house. Hence gemstones in relation to these can be prescribed for increasing the luck factor of the person concerned.
HOWEVER, other things are also taken into consideration before prescribing the gemstone and exact nature of its fulfilment can only be evaluated by analysing the birth chart. So don't self medicate yourself. Always seek guidance and advice of a learned astrologer.

TAKEAWAY:

  • Normally, the life-stones and fortune stones are prescribed.
  • Gemstones of mutually inimical signs should never be worn together. For example, Jupiter and Venus are mutually inimical signs, therefore, Yellow sapphire or topaz should never be worn along with Diamond.
  • Utmost precaution to be taken while prescribing the gemstone and by the wearer also. If any planet is inimical to the Lord of the Lagna i.e. Ascendant lord, its gemstone or mantra can further elevate the problem rather than improve especially related to the house owned by the planet. For example, if the lord of the fourth house is inimical to the Lagna lord, then its related gemstone can reduce the materialistic and domestic happiness of the wearer.
  • Generally, if a gemstone is prescribed to enhance the positive effects of the beneficial planet in the chart, it is to be worn in the right hand. If the gemstone is being worn to reduce the ill effects of the malefic planet, it should be worn in the left hand. This is the general outlook. It may vary as per the chart and the astrologer.
  • It is usually advised not to consume non-vegetarian food in order to fetch maximum results from the gemstone. It becomes all the more significant when native wears Sattwika Graha (pious planet) gemstones such as yellow sapphire.
  • Generally, the planet which is exalted, in the houses such as angle or trine and is friendly to the Ascendant lord gives very beneficial effects if its gemstone is worn along with the gemstone of the Ascendant lord. For example, if the Ascendant(Sagittarius) Lord is Jupiter and the Sun is placed in the 5th house under Aries sign. In this position, Sun gets exalted in the Aries and being in one of the trine houses, becomes benefic. Also, it is a friendly sign to the Ascendant lord Jupiter. Hence, wearing Yellow sapphire(for Jupiter) and Ruby(for the Sun) gives synergistic benefic effects to the native.
  • Buying from the trusted vendor or gemologist is very important towards wearing any gemstone. As there is no use of investing even a small amount of money in fake stones.
  • Ask for the lab certificate with the gemstone you buy. Try not to invest in uncertified gemstones.
  • According to me, the sheer wearing of gemstones would do no good unless you recite the associated mantra with the respective gemstone you wear. Every gemstone has a few sets of mantras related to it. One should practice giving at least 2-3 minutes of recitation of the same to activate the gemstones and yield the desired results.
  • Last but not least, always seek proper guidance from a learned and experienced astrologer or gemologist before wearing any gemstone. As the good astrologer would thoroughly analyse your birth chart and then advise you on the perfect gemstone according to your desired purpose.

COMMON PLACEMENTS OF THE GEMSTONES

PLANET - GEMSTONE - HAND'S FINGER

SUN - RUBY - RING FINGER

MOON - PEARL - LITTLE FINGER

JUPITER - YELLOW SAPPHIRE - INDEX FINGER

MARS - RED CORAL - RING FINGER

MERCURY - EMERALD - LITTLE FINGER

VENUS - DIAMOND - MIDDLE FINGER

SATURN - BLUE SAPPHIRE - MIDDLE FINGER

RAHU - HESSONITE - RING FINGER

KETU - CAT'S EYE - MIDDLE FINGER

HOWEVER, this above mentioned is what prescribed often. The suitable finger with respect to gemstones is something which will differ in some cases. This can be further advised correctly after birth chart analysis.

As far as the hand is concerned, the right hand is generally the one which is advised by the majority of the astrologers.
It is already mentioned above in what cases one should go for right or left hand.

Apart from this, I would like to add that the right-handed person has his right hand as an active hand which indicates his conscious mind while the left hand is the passive hand indicating the sub-conscious mind. Vice-versa goes for the left-handed person.

According to me, one should wear the gemstone in his/her active hand so that one's deeds(karma) consequently get altered in a positive and productive path. In this way, the wearer becomes optimistic and self-confident. Also, one does not shy away from his responsibilities, thereby believe in his own karma and work towards his own salvation.

METALS FOR RINGS/PENDANTS

The three principal colours for the bodies of deities in spirituality are:

Yellow (Devi/Shakti - The divine mother who gives us food and protection)

White (Lord Shiva - who cleanses our sin)

Blue (Lord Vishnu - Sky is the direction of the heaven/emancipation)

Hence the three metals used for the astrological purpose are:

Gold (Yellow)

Silver, Platinum, etc (White)

Steal, Iron, Lead, etc (Blue)

However, sometimes Copper is also used for Fire element for the Sun and the Mars in combination with Gold.
But for the astrological purpose, it is always better to incorporate the stones in either Gold or Silver.

Gold stands for male planets such as the Sun, Mars, etc. and Silver stands for female planets such as the Venus, etc.

This is all about the post guys! Any suggestion or opinions are welcomed.

Until Next time!

Stay Happy and Blessed!
